Liguus fasciatus graphicus
form crassus
Simpson, 1920

Collected on Howe Key, Fl.
This is one of two shells collected on Howe Key, in the "big" hammock, just west
of Big Pine Key. Both shells were collected a few days prior to the arrival of
hurricane Donna. Simpson described the type from one shell collected in
Watson's hammock on Big Pine Key. Pilsbry describes the bronzy peripheral line,
in Simpson's description, as "apparently a green cuticular line and not corresponding
to the peripheral line typical of graphicus." It is doubtful that Pilsbry examined the
Simpson holotype. Because of the scarcity of specimens there is doubt whether it is
an established form or albinistic individuals of graphicus. The original holotype from
the Simpson collection has been lost.
The form crassus remains the rarest shell in Liguus collections.

Collected on Lower Matecumbe Key, FL.
This shell is from the Lower Matecumbe Key colony.
One other population exists on Lignumvitae Key where
it is sympatric with variety delicatus and simpsoni.

Liguus fasciatus graphicus
variety simpsoni
Pilsbry, 1921

Collected on Lower Matecumbe Key, FL.
This shell is from the Lower Matecumbe Key colony.
One other population exists on Lignumvitae Key where
it is sympatric with delicatus and lignumvitae.

dohertyAP.jpg (12906 bytes)

Liguus fasciatus graphicus
variety dohertyi
Pflueger, 1934

Collected on Lower Matecumbe Key, FL.
Found only in a pure colony, at the beach hammock,
on Lower Matecumbe Key. The variety dohertyi is now extinct
as a result of total destruction of the hammock
and the colony by the very severe hurricane of 1935.
L= 46.7 mm , W= 24.7 mm
