and Isle of Pines

The Liguus fasciatus ssp. photo page #1

This is a photo and information page for the Liguus fasciatus ssp. of Cuba.
The listed subspecies do not all have available photos at the moment, they will
have verified photos if I can find specimens to photograph. Some
may have been synonymized or have become "nomen nudum".

Discussion of the Liguus fasciatus spp.
The fasciatus is widespread throughout the main Island of Cuba, the
offshore keys and Isla de Pinos (the largest offshore key / island south of Cuba).
The following is a synopsis of information on the first six of these Liguus;
type locality, holotype or
paratype depository and publication of description.
The photo pages will discuss them in groups of six, in alphabetical order.

Liguus fasciatus achatinus Clench 1934 -
Type locality: LosArroyos,Holguin,OrienteProvince,Cuba.
Holotype: Museum of Comparative Zoology (Harvard) MCZ 58,803.

Description: Clench, 1934, Occ. Papers, Boston Soc. of Natl. Hist.,
Vol 8:107-108, plt 7, fig 1.
Note: This is the largest of all the Liguus. It is variable in the extent of banding
and cuticular/sutural lines. Confusion exists with feriai. Some collectors and
shell dealers label feriai as an albino achatinus.

Liguus fasciatus aedilli de la Torre 1953 -
Type locality: Loma de Bibanasí, near the town of Martí,
Matanzas Province, Cuba.
Holotype: Not known.
Description: de la Torre, 1953, Memorias Sociedad Cubana de
Historia Natural, Vol 21(2):227

Liguus fasciatus aguayoi Clench 1934 -
Type locality: Punta Roja, Holguin, Oriente Province, Cuba.
Holotype: Museum of Comparative Zoology (Harvard) MCZ 76,696.
Description: Clench, 1934, Occ. Papers, Boston Soc. of Natl. Hist.,
Vol 8:109, plt 7, fig 2.

Comment: The L.f. aguayoi shown above are specimens from the collection
at the Harvard Museum of Comparative Zoology. Lot MCZ 110,909 are from
the Ex-L. Pequeño collection and MCZ 110,752 are from the Ex-P. Prida
collection. Special thanks to MCZ (Harvard) and Mr. Adam J. Baldinger,
Curatorial Associate of Malacology at MCZ, for the loan of the specimens.
Note:
I have doubt as to the correct identification of MCZ 110,752, as the
locality, Cayo Majá, is distant from the aguayoi colony near Holguin. The
shell morphology is also different from aguayoi but very close to sanctamariae
found on Cayo Santa Maria near Caibarien
.

Liguus fasciatus alcaldei Sanchez Roig 1951 -
Type locality: Gallo, Jaguey Grande, Cuba.
Holotype: Collection Sanchez Roig No. 1067
Description: Sanchez Roig, 1951, Revista Sociedad Malacologica
"Carlos de la Torre", Vol 8(1):23-24, plate 4, fig 1.

Liguus fasciatus angelae Clench & Aguayo 1934 -
Type locality: Punta Roja, Holguin, Oriente Province, Cuba.
Holotype: Museum of Comparative Zoology (Harvard) MCZ 76,698.
Description: Clench, 1934, Occ. Papers, Boston Soc. of Natl. Hist.,
Vol 8:110, plt 7, fig 3.

Liguus fasciatus añei Sanchez Roig 1951-
Type locality: Finca "Las Vueltas" (El Sabanazo) Alonso Rojas,
Pinar del Rio Province, Cuba.
Holotype: Collection Sanchez Roig No. 1020
Description: Sanchez Roig, 1951, Revista Sociedad Malacologica
"Carlos de la Torre", Vol 8(1):34-35, plate 5, fig 7.
