The Dubious Taxa

Photos and information of described/authored taxa that are
the result of artificial, that is, manipulated crossings of natural forms.
These hybrid/forms are true breeding and are established in "planted"
colonies within the Everglades National Park and the South Florida area.
Here they are placed within the nomenclatural hierarchy or "scheme"
developed by Pilsbry and within the subspecies group
close to
the suspected or known parent subspecies.

margaD.jpg (17657 bytes)

margaAP.jpg (18500 bytes)

Liguus fasciatus testudineus variety margaretae
Jones, 1979
This form is the result of a cross between the form lucidovarious and the form clenchi.
Both of these forms were planted in a hammock of the Southern Everglades devoid
of other Liguus and distant from their respective type locality hammocks in Pinecrest and
Collier County. Collected in the Southern Everglades [A. Jones]

[Collection E. Power]
L= 51.3  mm   W= 28.1  mm

kennethD.jpg (15149 bytes)

kennethAP.jpg (13703 bytes)

Liguus fasciatus testudineus variety kennethi
Jones, 1979
This form was discovered in the Pinecrest area and is suspect of a cross between endemic
forms such as marmoratus and Fla Keys shells "planted" by Erwin Winte
(Natl Park Ranger and Archie's best snailing buddy).
Collected at Hammock #13, Pinecrest [A. Jones].
[Collection E. Power]
L= 51.9  mm   W= 29.6  mm

beardiD.jpg (11640 bytes)

beardiAP.jpg (13431 bytes)

Liguus fasciatus testudineus variety beardi
Jones, 1979
This form is from the same cross that resulted in margaretae and is very similar except for
markings and columellar area characteristics.The last surviving colony in the Southern Everglades
was destroyed by severe fires and "hit" by hurricane Andrew.
Collected in the Southern Everglades [A.Jones].

[Collection E. Power]
L= 43.7  mm   W= 24.5  mm

wintedD.jpg (16737 bytes)

wintedAP.jpg (14637 bytes)

Liguus fasciatus testudineus variety wintei
Humes, 1954
Dark phase, collected at Hammock #103 Long Pine Key, So. Everglades.
[Collection E. Power]
L= 48.8  mm   W= 28.6  mm

winteLD.jpg (13038 bytes)

winteLAP.jpg (14518 bytes)

Liguus fasciatus testudineus variety wintei
Humes, 1954
Light phase, collected at Hammock #103 Long Pine Key, So. Everglades.
[Collection E. Power]
L= 50.6  mm   W= 29.5  mm

L.f. wintei, light phase

L.f. wintei, dark phase

L.f. fuscoflammellus

Liguus fasciatus testudineus
variety wintei
Humes, 1954
Side by side comparison of light and dark phases of wintei to  fuscoflammellus.
This form is a "failure" in the attempt to establish the natural hybrid  fuscoflamellus.
Erwin Winte and Archie Jones spent quite some time re-creating the "fusco" by crossing
forms marmoratus, castaneus and alternatus. Though successful in establishing white and
pink "tipped" fuscoflamellus, these dark and light phases of wintei are considered a spin-off
of the experiment. The form wintei is well established in the Southern Everglades and in the
Pinecrest area as a result of "introductions" by Erwin Winte.
